MARIETA CISTELLERA "Marieta, basket maker"
This is a short "sardana". "Sardana" is a circle dance, typical of Catalonia. This is a very simple one, easy to dance.
"Marieta cistellera" is a sung dance which tells us about an old craft: making baskets.
The song tells about a young man ordering a basket to "Marieta", the basket maker, to go and pick up carnations. She tells him she would make the basket if the carnations were for her. However, at the end, she mentions she is already engaged, and she has some flowers ready for his fiancee. Please, follow the link to watch the video and see the translation of the lyrics.

AL VENT ("To the wind")
"Al vent" is one of the greatest hits of the valencian singer Raimon, short name for Ramon Pelegero Sanchis.
Raimon wrote this song on the 20th October 1959, and it is still one of the best known songs in Catalonia. This 50 year old song has been translated into many languages, and it is still in full force, because of its pacifist and internationalist nature. It is considered as part of the soundtrack in our process of transition towards democracy.
Please, follow the link to watch the song, performed by students in year 3, and also for the lyrics and its translation. You can also find a video with the original song, sung by his author Raimon.
There's also a third video. Halldor Mar is an Icelandic singer who lives in Catalonia. He has translated some well known catalan songs into English, and "Al Vent" ("The wind"), is one of them. You can listen to his version in the video, following the link.

LA MASOVERA ("The farmer's wife")
"La Masovera" is a well known traditonal catalan song. It is a cumulative song, with constant repetition.
This is why it is very much used in the kindergardens. There's important vocabulary to learn such as the days of the week, vegetables and food. It is also good for phonetics practice.
Although the lyrics are quite long (because of the repetitions), it is easy to remember if you follow the days of the week. In the catalan version, rhyme helps too.
Like "Marieta cistellera", "La masovera" can also be danced. And that's what you can see in the video we recorded for you. Enjoy!
